[...] Until now, that is, and John Edwards has none other than Ann Coulter parody Ann Coulter to thank as the leftosphere is working overtime this weekend to turn this year’s CPAC — where Coulter essentially referred to Edwards as a “faggot” — into the political equivalent of this year’s NBA All-Star weekend in Las Vegas (Pacman Jones or no). Call it the reverse Perlstein: the leftosphere always liked Edwards. Now they finally have a reason to rally around him again. [...]

Notice that in the context of the above comment there's no aversion to the term "hit piece". It isn't about whether the charges are true, or unfounded, or anything aside from designed to affect the target negatively. This seems significant only in light of the comment thread a few posts back, wherein much hand-wringing occurred over whether or not there was a hit job against those Edwards staffers.

Since I wrote the quoted passage, I'll comment. You've got it figured out a lot better than Perlstein. The opinion at FR mainly runs against Romney, who consider him a RINO. I support Romney as the most conservative realistic candidate. I believe that the MSM can accurately figure out who the conservative is, and on him they train their fire. I've tried to point out to the majority at FR that the numerous MSM hit pieces undercut the RINO charge. I doubt I've made much headway at FR.

It will take a lot more than hostility from the MSM to get the conservatives comfortable with Romney. For the most part the hit pieces are seen as further confirmation of their initial inclinations.
