How about Sarah Palin? When you Google her the Adwords are:

JohnMcCain.com/Palin (makes sense)

www.indecision2008.com (Comedy Central thinks it's a great joke)

Surprised no democrat has puuchased an adword to list the weaknesses they feel her campaign has. I enjoyed your analysis and you brought up some good points.

One thing I think you missed is that buying adwords that are a trademark might be a violation of law.

http://mccainvsfact.com/blog/?p=45

The 1999 Trademark Amendment was intended to extend trademark protection to websites and the Internet. This includes Meta Tags, Keywords and any other trademark already owned by a person or company.

Do you think Apple would allow HP to buy the Adword "Apple" and display an advertisement for an HP computer without at least attempting to get the ad pulled down as a violation of Apple's Trademark?

You can't even go into a bar and order a run and "Coke" and be given another beverage without the barkeep being in danger of Coca-Cola's lawyers being all over him.

How can the candidates get away with this? Even if it is not a violation of law, it is a sleazy scam.

The google adwords are an interest (and not really surprising) result of how the internet works. But ultimately they are still just commercials. I'm of the opinion that people will ultimately settle down on websites or portals that they trust and go from there. Here's my own creation...

I played around a bit with adword campaigns, but of course the competiton is fierce. And I have no money. So I'll just stick to word of mouth myself.

Gunga, be careful. I tried that and I ended out with a governor whose only concrete plan is to put a hiatus on new charter schools (including ones the previous administration approved, and ones sponsored by local school districts and universities.)

Though it is entertaining to see one of his party's most reliable voter groups splinter a tiny little bit (and see public school teachers worried about the future of a charter school,) after watching the other side's incumbent descend to unheard-of lows in voter approval rates last year.

And truth be told, I don't think the most annoying guy in the state (who push-polled my house so aggressively that, despite there being five of us to answer the phone, I got dinged personally several times in the last six weeks of the primary campaign.)

Regarding AdWords: I'm really quite surprised none of the campaigns have bought any of those words. I mean, okay, any one or two would be expected -- but no "social security" OR "immigration"? Huh? Also, it appears that conservatives are ever ready to devour their own, leaving the advantage to the random guy no one thinks can win, whose enemies are too distracted by one another's prancing to notice him till three days before Iowa.

The Google Primaries:...

Candidates are buying not only their own names on AdWords, but also those of their rivals. (Blog P.I.) "Smart, yet somehow self-demeaning," says Glenn @ Instapundit.......

This time around I'm voting for the candidate who annoys me the least...fewest lame push-polls...fewest intrusive phone calls... and the fewest impotent internet ads. Since this election cycle seems to have started some time around the turn of the last century, maybe I can vote for Woodrow Wilson.
