Actually, Frank, it has an enormous effect. Political junkies know where to find the info they're looking for, but the average Joe Citizen sitting down to google a candidate ends up with disinfo and distortion. Seems to me they get enough of that in the MSM. As far as I'm concerned, google-bombing amounts to Internet stalking and harassment. If it wasn't for google-bombing, Ron Paul would still, rightfully, be a virtual unknown. Instead, between his supporters and those on the left who want to split the Republican party, he is the great hope of the anti-war-on-terrorism crowd.

[...] As long as there remains a benefit (or perceived benefit) to Google bombing, amateur politicos will keep it in their toolbox. There’s no way to stop them from doing it. So, as I argued earlier in the year, the only way to counter negative Google bombing is with positive or reverse Google bombing. [...]

I just wonder if the effort is worth it. How many people make decisions about candidates based on Google searches? Maybe some do, but I doubt it's a big influence. I think the popularity of Google-bombing is its one of the few things the nutroots can do where they can see a direct result.
